Cayman Easter

It’s been ages since I updated my blog and now there are so many things to tell! We’ve been absolutely flat out getting everything finalised for Brucefield Boutique B&B (as it is now called), which has now opened, although the official launch day is the 14th May. Esther and Ray have had to hit the ground running since they’ve had a full house for the last 2 nights! Anyway, we’re looking forward to having some more free time once it is properly launched and the website is live (very soon). Even Brucefield had to take a break over the Easter weekend however, which turned out to be a massive one for us, all good because we made some more friends! Easter in Grand Cayman is traditionally a camping weekend, as it is the only weekend in the year when it is legal to camp on the beaches. The theory is that everyone should be allowed to enjoy the beauty of living at the beach for at least one weekend. So, over Easter, the beaches are packed. Of course, we live at the beach already, so stayed comfortably in our lovely house and went to parties at others! A highlight for us was Easter Sunday, when we went out with Mel and Mick and Sophie and Keith on Sophie and Keith’s boat to Sandbar. Sandbar is just that – a shallow area of sand in the middle of the ocean, just inside the reef. For years in Cayman they have been feeding the stingrays at Sandbar and at Stingray city, and the rays are now so friendly you can touch them and hold them. We laughed like drains to watch Sophie become a human filling in a stingray sandwich as she jumped in with a whole packet of squid in her hand. Not only was she covered in stingrays, but the birds started dive-bombing her to get at the squid too! The water at sand bar is waist high, so you can stand happily drinking a beer while the stingrays swim around at your feet hoping for more tasty morsels. They’re lovely to touch and feel grittily soft. It’s a truly a wonderful experience and we’ll definitely take upcoming visitors to see the stingrays.
